Recurring buy tools or your own limit orders: two ways to run a DCA plan on an exchange

Guides · 2026-10-17

Dollar-cost averaging is meant to be boring: the same amount, on a schedule, regardless of the price. Exchanges make it easy with recurring buy or auto-invest features that run in the background. Some people prefer to place their own limit orders each week instead. Both work. They differ in how the purchase is executed, how the cost is calculated and, importantly, in how likely you are to keep going after a few months. Look at those three things before you commit to either.

How a scheduled purchase feature executes

The recurring buy or auto-invest feature, whose name varies by exchange, buys at the scheduled time at the price available then. Depending on the platform, it may execute through the spot market or through a convert-style quote, and it may draw from your spot balance, a funding balance or a linked card. Open the feature's help article and the plan's detail page to see which. The details page also shows each completed purchase with the amount received, which is what you should compare over time.

How your own limit orders differ

Placing a limit order yourself lets you choose the price, typically a little below the current market, so the order waits in the book as a maker order. Your maker rate on the fee page may be lower than the cost embedded in a scheduled feature, but the order may also not fill if price runs away. A common compromise is to place the limit at the start of the week and switch to a market buy if it has not filled by the end of it, so the plan never skips a period.

Compare the real cost with your own numbers

After a month or two of either method, export your purchase history. For each buy, divide the amount spent, fees included, by the quantity received. Do the same for the other approach if you test both side by side with small amounts. This effective price per coin is the only fair comparison, because headline fee rates leave out spread and quote differences. Write the results down; you will not remember them in six months.

Choose the approach you will keep doing

The best execution is worth little if you abandon the plan. If you travel, forget or get nervous when prices fall, an automatic schedule may suit you better despite a slightly higher cost. If you enjoy checking the market weekly and can keep the habit, limit orders reward the effort. Whichever you pick, set a calendar reminder each quarter to review the plan's details page and confirm it is still running as intended.
